Perto da margem

Museu Arpad Szenes - Vieira da Silva - Lisboa

07/10/2021 - 16/01/2022

Close to the edge

The exhibition includes works, mostly unseen before, using different media and techniques and dated from 2018 to 2021. Some of these works have an installation character, explicitly dialoguing with the Museum’s spaces. But others, pure two-dimensional, also participate in the strategy of building this exhibition as a continuous work.
Pedro Calapez deepens one of the issues that has always occupied him: the discussion of the traditional limits of the painting. His visual setups, presented as a “window to an unpredictable world”*, create experimental spaces that provide us with different ways of seeing. The game and chance, the rules of the game and the unexpected results of doing and seeing, the knowledge of the history of painting and the result of the drift of the “body-that-sees the works”, are essential pairs in the experience that the artist offers us / submit us.
Remaining and constantly leaving the conventional space of painting, Calapez’s works expand before the gaze of those who observe them. And the spectator, prompted by the multiplication of shapes, colors, lights, shadows and materials, and by the coincidences and mismatches between all these elements, is finally involved or captured by these artworks.
