– Pedro Calapez, in Finisterra, XXXVI, 2001.

“It is in the landscape’s lack of definition that it emerges in its full meaning.” – Pedro Calapez, in Finisterra, XXXVI, 2001.

Architecture, albeit traversed by the most unexpected formal and technical solutions, has always marked the work of Pedro Calapez (Lisbon, 1953) as an organising and even structuring matrix. Alongside architecture are memory and a well spring of references that he deconstructs, refines and reinvents in order to create fragmented “polychromatic fields of an abstract nature”[i].

Focusing on his most recent work, specifically pieces created in 2011 and 2012, this exhibition offers the visitor a highly differentiated visual field. New themes, forms, series and approaches seem to ensure that an infinite range of possibilities is offered by a body of work which, in a context of continuous experimentation and questioning, has been grounded from the very beginning in the reformulation of the academic principles and conceptual protocols of painting.
