Debaixo de cada cor

Galeria Belo Galsterer - Lisboa

07/05/2021 - 31/07/2021

[PT] (english below)

Although this is a fairly common illusion, art is not just fantastic geometry, or rather a more complex topology, it is related to weight, density, light, colour. (Henri Focillon, The Life of forms in art)

As part of this year’s program, Belo-Galsterer Gallery is delighted to invite you to “Under each colour”, Pedro Calapez’s third individual exhibition in our gallery in Lisbon.
The artist presents new works, oil paintings, in general large format canvases, which introduce us to a universe of explosive colour, at the same time as immersive.
Pedro Calapez occupies an exemplary place in the painting of the contemporary Portuguese art scene: he has stood out for more than four decades, for his dedication to experimenting in painting, using different formats and supports, exploring conventional forms or supports that enter the field of sculpture or even installation.
Drawing, which has become more evident in the past, even in the field of painting, has given way to more impulsive patches of colour, covering the entire surface. In this new series of works, the artist returns to a more traditional format of painting – oil painting on canvas – however combining drawing with painting. It thus creates an overlap of several layers, which leads us to follow its creative process, camouflaging it below: we pass from the visible to the still legible, but almost invisible. The works in this exhibition all take on a more abstract register, despite an initial line that seems to want to reveal more: that which is “under each colour”.
